It felt like the thing I wanted to be part of."For the pic's real leading player, Thomas Horn, billing was the last thing on his mind, "The big surprise was that I was cast in the first place, frankly. A lot of people have said that, Alan told Access Hollywood on Wednesday evening at the BAFTA Britannia Awards in Los Angeles. But while the idea of an Eli Gold show is flattering, Alan said he is pleased to be part of the ensemble, which includes Julianna Marguiles, Josh Charles, Archie Panjabi and Christine Baranski. Alan hosted Wednesdays BAFTA event, which honored actors including Warren Beatty and Ben Stiller, and he was pleased to be master of ceremonies. I think its such a great thing because its everyones body of work, Alan told Access. Its not just for like a film thats been heavily marketed or pushed. Its not fad-dy, you know what I mean? A lot of award ceremonies are. The award season itself is really Its about someones whole life. All the people that are being nominated have made such huge contributions, really over a great number of years, and some of them arent that old. Some of them are. Its just lovely. Happy 94th Birthday, Joan Fontaine! What's Her Finest Screen Moment?
Both Joan Fontaine and her large sister Olivia p Havilland are thriving well to their nineties, and despite the fact that they still don’t seem to be talking with one another, they remain a couple of Hollywood’s most esteemed thespians ever. (Watch p Havilland’s “Melanie Takes note of” interview from 2004’s Gone using the Wind re-release — just lovely!) Around the occasion of Ms. Fontaine’s 94th birthday, let’s have a stroll in to the Oscar champion’s filmography and discover her finest motion picture moment. I’m nearly crying at just how much I really like and also have skipped Rebecca. Alfred Hitchcock’s 1940 Best Picture champion goes beyond its era and really appears more contemporary than most of the director’s later films. Joan Fontaine plays the un named “Second Mrs. P Winter,” who marries the dashing Maxim (Laurence Olivier) and moves along with him at his great estate Manderley, but soon finds she's condemned to reside in the cisco kid of his first wife. Rebecca is cast perfectly, having a lamb-like Fontaine quivering and bleating her distance to our hearts, Olivier chilly as Maxim, and also the legendary Dame Judith Anderson because the dour, cruel Mrs. Danvers. The 3 received Oscar nominations, but Fontaine may be the true thought because the undervalued bride. And just in case that’s insufficient old Hollywood miracle for you personally, here’s Fontaine’s screen test for that role. She outperform Vivien Leigh, Anne Baxter, and Loretta Youthful — and you will understand why with this particular meek, yet engrossing portrayal received her the part. Happy birthday, Ms. Fontaine! What’s your preferred moment of hers?

Metallica's Lars Ulrich handed down Kill Bill soundtrack
Music being such a fundamental element of a Quentin Tarantino movie, you'd expect that after he will get together and among the greatest names in rock it might be an effective meeting from the minds. In Lars Ulrich's situation, that wasn't really true. The first connecting seems like it went pretty much, using the pair getting dinner inside a Bay Area restaurant in 2001."Getting Q.T. six inches from my face, eyes dancing, intensely animated, explaining in intricate detail how he'd written and choreographed the 2 primary fight moments within the film towards the Metallica tunes 'Enter Sandman' and 'Sad But True'. Fists would impact faces on accents. Kicks would land on cymbal hits. Physiques would twirl together with the rhythm from the music. Tarantino's next-level movie miracle married to Metallica music, all switched as much as 11," Ulrich told the Bay Area Examiner. The film? Kill Bill Vol. 1.However, it's when Ulrich browse the 180-page script that things began to visit wrong."Page by page, I realized that many of the was designed in a language which was outdoors of my arena of understanding. I'd never experienced a story such as this, occur, in my experience, a really foreign culture of fighting techinques and Asian misconceptions. I simply could not wrap my thick Danish mind around it," the rock star confesses."I championed his movies, loved him like a person, but in the finish from the 180 pages, I sitting there somewhat bewildered and felt very uncool because of not setting it up. I wasn't able to appreciating its brilliance."Sad but true indeed.Ulrich, referred to turning lower the Kill Bill soundtrack as, "the only greatest mistake I have produced in the creative department.""Obviously Kill Bill switched to be far above brilliant, as have his subsequent movies, that have all been an essential part of my existence within the 2000s. Even today I still worship the floor Q.T. uses,Inch he added.

Broadway catches 'Peter Pan'
'Peter Pan' prequel 'Peter and the Starcatcher' is headed to Broadway later this spring.Producers of "Peter Pan" stage prequel "Peter and the Starcatcher" have pulled the trigger on a Broadway transfer, announcing a spring bow on the Main Stem. Play, adapted by Rick Elice ("Jersey Boys") from the novel by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson, has been a rumored contender for the Rialto since its well-reviewed bow earlier this year at Off Broadway's NY Theater Workshop. Show could be the first of the two Rialto outings this season with ties to Disney Theatrical Prods.: "Newsies," the legit adaptation of the 1992 movie musical, also is circling a potential Broadway berth following a well-received world preem at the Paper Mill Playhouse last month. Disney Theatrical, which owns the underlying rights to "Peter" and has been closely involved in its development, has licensed the title to Broadway producers Nancy Nagel Gibbs and Greg Schaffert, both on the producing of 2005 outing "All Shook Up." For the Rialto staging, Disney will be credited as a producer with the right to a vote in major creative decisions. Helmed by Roger Rees and Alex Timbers, "Peter" follows the origin story of Peter Pan and his enduring enmity with Captain Hook. Prior to its run at NYTW, the show was developed in a early lab production at the Williamstown Theater Festival in 2007 and subsequently as part of the Page to Stage series at the La Jolla Playhouse. Casting for the Broadway incarnation has not been nailed down. The Off Broadway version starred Adam Chanler-Berat ("Next to Normal") as Peter, Celia Keenan-Bolger as his love interest and Christian Borle as Peter's pirate nemesis. Borle's current gig as one of the stars of upcoming NBC skein "Smash" seems likely to complicate any involvement in the upcoming version of "Peter." On Broadway "Peter" could prove a tough sell, as a non-musical offering with a relatively large cast of 13 and, based on the Off Broadway incarnation, no star casting. On the other hand, "Peter" comes to the Main Stem after earning the thumbs-up from several Gotham critics, and it also taps into the hidden backstory of a well-known all-ages tale, a la megahit "Wicked." Rialto design team reunites Off Broadway collaborators Wayne Barker (music), Steven Hoggett (movement), Donyale Werle (set), Paloma Young (costumes), Jeff Croiter (lights) and Darron L. West (sound). Broadway venue and exact dates remain to be announced. Contact Gordon Cox at gordon.cox@variety.com

Happy Finish
A Nordisk Film discharge of a Zentropa Intl. Sweden, Trollhattan Film presentation and production. (Worldwide sales: TrustNordisk, Hvidovre, Denmark.) Created by Madeleine Ekman. Directed by Bjorn Runge. Script, Runge, Kim Fupz Aakesen. With: Ann Petren, Malin Buska, Gustaf Skarsgard, Johan Widerberg, David Dencik, Mariah Kanninen, Hanna Malmberg.Good intentions don't always result in preferred effects in "Happy Finish," the most recent feature from Swedish theater and periodic film director Bjorn Runge ("Daybreak," "Mouth to Mouth"). A little web of interconnected tales that fans out around an eager mother's difficult rapport together with her thin-skinned artist boy, the pic reps an average slice of Scandinavian miserabilism, from the solid acting to the fairly straightforward aesthetic. Pic preemed in the recent San Sebastian fest and will also be welcomed at other film occasions, though ever-after happiness is likeliest around the Euro tube. Widowed driving-school instructor Jonna (Runge regular Ann Petren) takes her grown-up boy, Peter (Gustaf Skarsgard, Alexander's brother), in after he suffers a failure and it is abandoned by his pretty g.f. (Hanna Malmberg). Home, the still-fragile painter falls for pretty Katrine (Malin Buska), Jonna's cleaner, who's herself in an abusive relationship together with her b.f. (Johan Widerberg), who owes money to some thug (David Dencik). Aesthetically more straightforward than "Mouth to Mouth," this depressing crisscrosser does feature one attention-getting sequence: a sluggish zoom that discloses ace thesp Skarsgard's face because he asks Katrine an essential question.Camera (color), Ulf Brantas editor, Lena Runge music, Ebba Forsberg production designer, Jette Lehman costume designer, Anna Karlsson. Examined at San Sebastian Film Festival (competing), Sept. 20, 2011. Running time: 94 MIN. Contact Boyd van Hoeij at news@variety.com
Twit Wit: The Best 5 Tweets About Movies This Weekend
comments: 0 || add yours It was an underwhelming weekend at the box office, but that didn’t stop Twitter from reacting to the fancy-free stylings of Footloose, the terror of The Thing and even the already-forgotten The Big Year. We’ve racked up the best five tweets about movies this weekend — and the most dubious telegrams comes from one of the film’s own stars. 5. No Agenda Behind 'Muppets' on 'Modern Family' (Video)
If you were watching Modern Family with the rest of the Emmy-winning comedy's 13.4 million viewers Wednesday, Oct. 12, you likely made the assumption that the multiple Muppets movie plugs were either paid or the synergistic workings of Disney, the corporate parent to both the show's network home and the movie's studio.our editor recommends'Muppets' Movie Soundtrack Features Feist, Flight of the Conchords, Andrew Bird As it happens, neither is true. Instead, the mentions --first in the movie theater, and then later in Cam and Mitchell's retelling of the movie theater story to the extended family-- were 100 percent creatively driven, aspokesperson for the show confirmed. In this case, the series' writers were looking to include a current kids movie to reference in an arc about Cam and Mitchell ending up in the wrong theater, and then blasting a father who had taken his kids to see what the couple believed was a scary movie. That there was a Muppets ad for the movie, opening Nov. 23, running during one of the commercial breaks was still another coincidence. It's worth noting that Modern Family has a history of incorporating actual brands and pop cultural references to lend authenticity to its storylines without any larger corporate agenda at play. You'll recall what appeared an Apple tie-in during season one, when Phil Dunphy spent much of an episode pining for a new iPad for his birthday, even petting one adoringly at the end of the show. Though the show went through official channels to secure the then not-yet-released iPads for the shoot (and the late Steve Jobs sat on Disney's board), the idea to include them was initiated in the writers' room and no money was changed hands.(Given co-creatorsSteve LevitanandChris Lloyd's clout care of the show's critical and commercial success, multiple sources suggest they have earned the right --or at least, the power-- to deny any such requests when they do come up.) Pic players ply promos
DWA's Anne Globe, Warner's Sue Kroll, Fox's Oren Aviv and Universal's Josh Goldstine take the stage for a panel at Variety's Film Marketing Summit on Tuesday at the Universal Hilton.
In today's film biz, marketing may not be everything, but everything is definitely marketing. That was the prevailing sentiment Tuesday at Variety's Film Marketing Summit, as execs and creatives debated issues ranging from what aspects of a pic to reveal to auds, and when, to the integration of social media into promotion and new tools to propel auds to plexes.Execs from both the studios and the indie realm weighed in the scope of today's marketing approaches in back-to-back sessions at the Universal Hilton, with some some embracing -- and others wary of -- just how much material comes into public scrutiny as a film ramps up."You can't announce your title, your release date, your director, your casting choices without thinking of it as a piece of marketing," said Oren Aviv, prexy of domestic theatrical marketing and chief marketing officer at 20th Century Fox.Speaking at a session titled "State of the Theatrical Film Marketing Business," Aviv said his reaction to releasing early marketing materials -- trailers in particular -- is typically "terror," but that the process has its advantages, in that the long lead time and abundance of feedback "gives you the opportunity to shape your message.""You have time to screw it up," he said, "and fix it."Josh Goldstine, who joined Universal Pictures as marketing prexy in August, underscored the importance of galvanizing a message early and sticking to it."Do I want to make this look like something they've seen before, or something they haven't seen before?" Goldstine said, noting that U's marketing team, even before his arrival, had already decided to present "Bridesmaids" as a distinctly different kind of female-driven comedy. That turned out to be the right call. Changing people's expectations enabled the film as a whole to "tap into what was so inherently human and relatable in that movie: to embrace breaking the rules," said Goldstine. "That actually set the audience up for the heart of that movie to really connect with people."Likewise with "Horrible Bosses" and the "Hangover" films, which Warner Bros. worldwide marketing president Sue Kroll cited as examples of how today's long-lead marketing campaigns and multiple platforms allow audiences a more intimate look at a film's characters well before the films themselves unspool."Nowadays you can bring shape and definition to all the different characters through all that content," Kroll said. "With 'Horrible Bosses,' we had a great concept, but we branded it in a way that was unique for a comedy. Because when people understood all those characters and their different interactions, they understood what it was."During the afternoon's "Indies Make a Comeback" panel, FilmDistrict prexy Bob Berney stressed that in the indie and adult-oriented realms, the key to marketing is to stay focused on a specific audience -- but also to pick the right movies in the first place."It's all about finding that balance of art and marketability," Berney said.Howard Cohen, co-prexy of Roadside Attractions, agreed: "You have to court your core as an indie. Identify them -- and then stay with them."Beyond creating crucial first impressions of a film, finding ways to get auds involved -- through sites like Twitter, Facebook or Eventful -- is increasingly important, as execs at the panel titled "Urgency & Driving Moviegoing Frequency" noted."Letting people be part of the process pays off in spades. That's what social media is for," said Jordan Glazier, CEO of Eventful, adding that an online campaign that interacts with potential moviegoers creates "a sense of affiliation, belonging and kinship" which "translates to theatergoing."Ted Hong, chief marketing officer of online ticket seller Fandango, agreed, saying, "The power of online is it's much more of a dialogue. TV is still one way."The growth of online advertising also means studios need to figure out how to speak with audiences in a new way. "We want to protect the theatrical window," Hong said, "But we want studios to stop marketing and start connecting with audiences to the point where it doesn't feel like marketing."Landmark Theaters CEO Ted Landmark's Mundorff made a point of suggesting that studios spend more to support a film after it opens in theaters, not just before. "A lot of the time they're not supported," he said.Mundorff isn't a fan of discounting ticket prices to fill seats. He didn't approve of Lionsgate's pair-up with Groupon and Fandango to discount tickets for "The Lincoln Lawyer" earlier this year. "When the consumer is buying a $6 ticket, you are devaluing movies," he said. But the ploy worked for Fandango and Lionsgate, which said 89% of the people who took advantage of the discount said "they would not have seen the movie had it not been for Groupon," according to Hong. There are both perks and perils to other ticket-sales drivers as well, the panel noted. For Fandango, ticket sales on mobile devices have grown from 1% to 20% of the online ticket seller's business over just a couple of years, said Hong. Fandango is now testing barcodes that can be scanned in theaters when tix are purchased on cell phones. Two exhibs are currently testing the service, with a third coming on board soon. But as consumers rely more on their cell phones to text and tweet, their increased usage in theaters is turning off moviegoers to the point where exhibs need to remove them during screenings."When someone's not happy (about the no cell-phone policy), I say tell your friends," said Landmark's Mundorff, adding that "the worst offenders are the acquisition people at film festivals. It's already against all odds that these films get picked up."Mundorff said it would be shortsighted to phase out more traditional marketing tools. He said doesn't foresee a time when film ads no longer appear in newspapers."People read reviews and reviews drive our business," Mundorff said. "If the industry abandons newspapers, newspapers will abandon reviews."The biz, panelists agreed, needs to find ways to enhance the moviegoing experience as a whole."Our theaters are churches, and my goal is to preach to cinema fans of different denominations," said Henri Mazza, chief creative officer of the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, whose chain of theaters relies on positive word of mouth and serving alcohol in a more laidback setting to attract auds. The Texas-based chain has 10 locations, mostly within the Lone Star state, and one in Winchester, Virginia, but is looking to expand into Los Angeles and NY soon."The first couple of years was about perfecting the experience," Mazza said. Mia Farrow Zings Woody Allen on Twitter
Mia Farrow was married to Woody Allen for 12 years, and -- consequently -- appeared in many of his films (you're forgiven for losing count after 'Hannah and Her Sisters'). Well, it seems that Farrow left that decade-plus of being married with some of Allen's patented wit. On Twitter earlier this week, Mia responded, rather hilariously, to one of Sarah Silverman's posts. Check it out ahead. [via NYMag and WoW] Watch Online Transformers 3 Dark Of The Moon

Islands (Isole)
An Obraz Film production. (International sales: Ellipsis Media, Rome.) Produced by Selvaggia Sada, Gianluca Arcopinto. Directed by Stefano Chiantini. Screenplay, Chiantini, Guiliano Miniati, from a story by Massimo Gaudioso, Chiantini. With: Asia Argento, Ivan Franek, Giorgio Colangeli, Anna Ferruzzo, Pascal Zullino, Paolo Briguglia, Alessandro Tiberi, Vincenzo Crivello.Sympathetically acted and directed, Stefano Chiantini's "Islands" is a watchable Italo drama that nonetheless doesn't come up with the distinctive style, plot turns or psychological insight to elevate its antiquated story basics -- it's the old "attractive drifter beguiles wallflower daughter of resident crank in xenophobic village" chestnut. Toplined thesp Asia Argento's name will open some doors, though the real lead here is Czech actor Ivan Franek. Theatrical potential is modest, but ancillary looks brighter. Undocumented emigre worker Ivan (Franek) is scraping by, supporting himself and an ungrateful father who gambles away any money he can get his hands on. Journeying from their squalid coastal flat to a nearby island to work as a bricklayer, Ivan is not only cheated of his pay but gets beaten to boot. He's helped by Martina (Argento), who as an orphan was taken in to be raised as a daughter by Father Enzo (Giorgio Colangeli). She's antisocial, mute by choice and a beekeeper, reason enough for locals to consider her crazy. For his part, the recently retired, barely mobile Enzo is a crusty old cuss who resents being replaced at the church but could hardly have been an inspirational figure to his flock. Since Ivan doesn't even have money to get back to the mainland, and Martina offers shelter for the night, Enzo decides the stranger should earn his keep as housekeeper/nurse -- partly to spite the padre's sister Wilma (Anna Ferruzzo), whose spurned offers of assistance may spring less from family loyalty than from a covetous desire for the land her brother withholds from development. Surprisingly, this domestic situation suits all quite well. Courteous and warm, Ivan's presence has a thawing effect on both prickly Enzo and skittish Marina, even sparking a certain romantic frisson with the latter. But of course the villagers take exception to this "gypsy" interloper, leading to a conflict that's pretty rotely worked out and devoid of any real suspense. There is, however, a touching subtlety to the closing scene. Indie production makes good use of handsome scenery (it was shot in the Tremini Islands), though its general look is gritty rather than postcard-pretty. Perfs are strong if somewhat hemmed in by simplistic character writing, with soulful Franek faring best suggesting an inner life for his figure. Assembly is aptly unfussy but pro.Camera (color), Vladan Radovic; editors, Luca Benedetti; music, Piernicola Di Muro; production designer, Ludovica Ferrario; costume designers, Susanna Mastroianni, Francesca Tessari; sound (Dolby Digital), Tullio Morganti. Tucci Joins The Business You Keep
Together with Chris CooperRobert Redford has attracted a substantial and solid cast for his new drama The Business You Keep, nevertheless the fine thespian options just continue coming, with Stanley Tucci and Chris Cooper both signing on. Company, which Redford is both pointing and starring in, finds the veteran actor just like a former part of radical US group the sun and rain Undercover Organisation, which orchestrated a deal of protest bombings together with other terrorist functions inside the seventies. Nowadays, he tries to remain strictly concerning the lower low, but his cover is blown by an ambitious youthful reporter (Shia LaBeouf), who's considering both his past and also the possible participation in the botched robbery. Tucci's onto play LaBeouf's boss, the editor of his paper, while Cooper will probably be Redford's brother, who eventually eventually ends up aiding to guard his niece when her father must flee within the FBI. DreamWorks Animation preps Shanghai facility
DreamWorks Animation is drawing up plans to open a facility in Shanghai that will enable it to produce toons developed for the Chinese market. The company is currently considering candidates to fill various posts at the venture, including that of president, tapping Los Angeles-based recruitment firm RSR Partners to handle the headhunting duties. Word leaked of DWA's plans when prospective hires received the letter from RSR revealing the studio's plans to "establish a production and development presence in China." "As it is an important market for us and one in which the DreamWorks Animation brand and products have tremendous value, we continue to explore opportunities in China," said a DreamWorks Animation spokesperson. "Any further speculation is premature." Last month, DreamWorks inked a deal with Youku.com, a Chinese YouTube of online videos to distrib its films, starting with the "Kung Fu Panda" pics. Making a bigger move in China would make sense for DWA, considering how the "Kung Fu Panda" franchise was developed to appeal to that market. First film was the first animated release to earn more than 100 million yuan ($15 million) at the local box office there. This summer's sequel also performed strongly there, breaking B.O. records. "Kung Fu Panda 2," which Par distribbed for DWA domestic and internationally, established a new opening day mark for a foreign release in China just a week after Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" set the record. "Panda" pic took in $18.5 million over its two-day weekend in May. The film has earned $92 million in China since then. Altogether, it's collected $492 million from foreign territories and $657 million overall. Either way, a presence in China would enable DWA to tap into the growing B.O., which rose a whopping 64% last year, earning $1.5 billion. But given how the Chinese government restricts how many foreign films can unspool in China, DWA will still have to work with a local business to launch the new studio and bypass the restrictions the way Legendary recently launched Legendary East to produce a slate of live action pics in the region.
