Mia Farrow Zings Woody Allen on Twitter

Mia Farrow was married to Woody Allen for 12 years, and -- consequently -- appeared in many of his films (you're forgiven for losing count after 'Hannah and Her Sisters'). Well, it seems that Farrow left that decade-plus of being married with some of Allen's patented wit. On Twitter earlier this week, Mia responded, rather hilariously, to one of Sarah Silverman's posts. Check it out ahead. [via NYMag and WoW]

Islands (Isole)

An Obraz Film production. (International sales: Ellipsis Media, Rome.) Produced by Selvaggia Sada, Gianluca Arcopinto. Directed by Stefano Chiantini. Screenplay, Chiantini, Guiliano Miniati, from a story by Massimo Gaudioso, Chiantini. With: Asia Argento, Ivan Franek, Giorgio Colangeli, Anna Ferruzzo, Pascal Zullino, Paolo Briguglia, Alessandro Tiberi, Vincenzo Crivello.Sympathetically acted and directed, Stefano Chiantini's "Islands" is a watchable Italo drama that nonetheless doesn't come up with the distinctive style, plot turns or psychological insight to elevate its antiquated story basics -- it's the old "attractive drifter beguiles wallflower daughter of resident crank in xenophobic village" chestnut. Toplined thesp Asia Argento's name will open some doors, though the real lead here is Czech actor Ivan Franek. Theatrical potential is modest, but ancillary looks brighter. Undocumented emigre worker Ivan (Franek) is scraping by, supporting himself and an ungrateful father who gambles away any money he can get his hands on. Journeying from their squalid coastal flat to a nearby island to work as a bricklayer, Ivan is not only cheated of his pay but gets beaten to boot. He's helped by Martina (Argento), who as an orphan was taken in to be raised as a daughter by Father Enzo (Giorgio Colangeli). She's antisocial, mute by choice and a beekeeper, reason enough for locals to consider her crazy. For his part, the recently retired, barely mobile Enzo is a crusty old cuss who resents being replaced at the church but could hardly have been an inspirational figure to his flock. Since Ivan doesn't even have money to get back to the mainland, and Martina offers shelter for the night, Enzo decides the stranger should earn his keep as housekeeper/nurse -- partly to spite the padre's sister Wilma (Anna Ferruzzo), whose spurned offers of assistance may spring less from family loyalty than from a covetous desire for the land her brother withholds from development. Surprisingly, this domestic situation suits all quite well. Courteous and warm, Ivan's presence has a thawing effect on both prickly Enzo and skittish Marina, even sparking a certain romantic frisson with the latter. But of course the villagers take exception to this "gypsy" interloper, leading to a conflict that's pretty rotely worked out and devoid of any real suspense. There is, however, a touching subtlety to the closing scene. Indie production makes good use of handsome scenery (it was shot in the Tremini Islands), though its general look is gritty rather than postcard-pretty. Perfs are strong if somewhat hemmed in by simplistic character writing, with soulful Franek faring best suggesting an inner life for his figure. Assembly is aptly unfussy but pro.Camera (color), Vladan Radovic; editors, Luca Benedetti; music, Piernicola Di Muro; production designer, Ludovica Ferrario; costume designers, Susanna Mastroianni, Francesca Tessari; sound (Dolby Digital), Tullio Morganti. Tucci Joins The Business You Keep

Together with Chris CooperRobert Redford has attracted a substantial and solid cast for his new drama The Business You Keep, nevertheless the fine thespian options just continue coming, with Stanley Tucci and Chris Cooper both signing on. Company, which Redford is both pointing and starring in, finds the veteran actor just like a former part of radical US group the sun and rain Undercover Organisation, which orchestrated a deal of protest bombings together with other terrorist functions inside the seventies. Nowadays, he tries to remain strictly concerning the lower low, but his cover is blown by an ambitious youthful reporter (Shia LaBeouf), who's considering both his past and also the possible participation in the botched robbery. DreamWorks Animation preps Shanghai facility

DreamWorks Animation is drawing up plans to open a facility in Shanghai that will enable it to produce toons developed for the Chinese market. The company is currently considering candidates to fill various posts at the venture, including that of president, tapping Los Angeles-based recruitment firm RSR Partners to handle the headhunting duties. Word leaked of DWA's plans when prospective hires received the letter from RSR revealing the studio's plans to "establish a production and development presence in China." "As it is an important market for us and one in which the DreamWorks Animation brand and products have tremendous value, we continue to explore opportunities in China," said a DreamWorks Animation spokesperson. "Any further speculation is premature." Last month, DreamWorks inked a deal with Youku.com, a Chinese YouTube of online videos to distrib its films, starting with the "Kung Fu Panda" pics. Making a bigger move in China would make sense for DWA, considering how the "Kung Fu Panda" franchise was developed to appeal to that market. First film was the first animated release to earn more than 100 million yuan ($15 million) at the local box office there. This summer's sequel also performed strongly there, breaking B.O. records. "Kung Fu Panda 2," which Par distribbed for DWA domestic and internationally, established a new opening day mark for a foreign release in China just a week after Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" set the record. "Panda" pic took in $18.5 million over its two-day weekend in May. The film has earned $92 million in China since then. Altogether, it's collected $492 million from foreign territories and $657 million overall. Either way, a presence in China would enable DWA to tap into the growing B.O., which rose a whopping 64% last year, earning $1.5 billion. But given how the Chinese government restricts how many foreign films can unspool in China, DWA will still have to work with a local business to launch the new studio and bypass the restrictions the way Legendary recently launched Legendary East to produce a slate of live action pics in the region. Jerry Lambert Can't Escape His Role as Sony VP Kevin Butler

Kevin Butler is not your normal spokesperson. The job titletoting Sony executive leads departments from Add More Awesome to Family Showdowns to First Person Shooter Relations and answers customer queries while highlighting PlayStation 3's many functions.Just don't tell gamers he isn't real."It's like there is no Santa Claus," says actor Jerry Lambert, who plays the made-up Sony vice president Kevin Butler for PlayStation's "It Only Does Everything" campaign. "They get so disappointed. They want to believe this Sony executive is out there."What started as four commercial spots, with only one aired, turned into a spokesman gig, a major advertising campaign, and what Ben Stiller calls "the funniest things on television." Sony originally wanted a young gamer type as the spokesperson, according to Lambert, but advertising agency Deutsch/LA convinced the company to keep Lambert on as Butler. Almost 100,000 Twitter followers and countless YouTube views later, the rest is history. "Sony has a great sense of humor, and they've really pressed at the ad agency and me to come up with something that will hopefully sell the product and make them laugh," says Lambert. "It's been a blast to play."Lambert is a self-proclaimed late bloomer. In 1992, he moved to Los Angeles from New York, where he attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, and was dropped from his original commercial agency after 10 auditions with no callbacks. He didn't land his first commerciala spot for AT&Tuntil he was 40. Success comes to those who wait. Lambert was the spokesperson for Geico from 2002 to 2005, playing a company executive, and he appeared in a slew of Holiday Inn commercials from 2006 to 2007. He became PlayStation's spokesperson in 2009 and is starting his third year as Kevin Butler."I didn't really picture myself being in commercials," Lambert says. "I love doing them. They're like little movies."Lambert says having multiple campaigns air back to back helps with visibility, and although he is usually recognized as Butler, his consistent comedy work keeps him on casting directors' radar for other projects. "It definitely opens the door in terms of sitcoms and comedy films," Lambert says of working in commercials. "I was shooting a pilot, and Ben Stiller was producing it. One of the first things he said to me was 'I love the PlayStation commercials. They're the funniest thing on television.' "Lambert says adamantly that there is no difference between acting in commercials and acting in other mediums. "It's still acting," he argues. Creating Kevin Butler was not unlike creating a recurring character for a TV show."As the ad agency is writing the character, you discover more about the character," Lambert explains. "It's almost like doing a TV series where each week you get the script and you're like, 'I didn't know that.' You're learning about the character."Because Butler has generated such a huge following in the gaming community, Lambert gave a speech in character at the E3 gaming conference in 2010. ("Kevin Butler is my religion!" one commenter responded on YouTube.) But Sony was initially nervous about Lambert's ability to perform live, he says."They were afraid I wouldn't be able to go out in front of a crowd and speak, not realizing that I was a stage-trained actor," Lambert remembers. "That's not always required of you to do that as a commercial actor. This has gone to another level."Only one problem is left."When I sign autographs, I don't know whether to sign 'Kevin Butler' or 'Jerry Lambert,' " Lambert says. "He's part of the language of the gamers' world."Watch Jerry Lambert as Kevin Butler below: For more Kevin Butler spots, visit Kevin Butler's YouTube channel.

Hollywood Struggles to Get Back Into Indonesia

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) Western companies have flocked to Indonesia to sell everything from Louis Vuitton bags to Pizza Hut but one big business has held out against the foreign invasion. Cinema screens are currently off limits to most Hollywood blockbusters thanks to a virtual monopoly on film imports by a single company. And moviegoers in the nation of 240 million have just about had enough. With a booming national economy, a growing middle class and a relatively young population 36 percent are between the ages of 15 and 40 Indonesia provides a near bottomless market for consumer industries.Yet the film world has managed to escape many of the reforms that resulted in the dismantling of monopolies following the collapse in 1998 of the 32-year dictatorship of Suharto, who placed control of entire sectors in the hands of family and trusted friends. As long as Group 21 maintains a firm grip on all film imports and most screens in theaters nationwide, cinema lovers will have little to cheer about, said Raam Punjabi, a prominent producer and outspoken critic of the movie industry.Last year, there wasn't a single American blockbuster you couldn't find in Indonesia's glizty shopping malls, numbering in the thousands. But Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Twentieth Century Fox Film, Universal Pictures and others kicked off a boycott in February after the government said it would start enforcing a long-ignored import duty on all foreign flicks. When that dispute was finally resolved in June, a few Hollywood hits starting trickling back to the predominantly Muslim nation. But a related legal stoush between Group 21 and the government means the releases are sporadic and long behind other countries. Why the movie industry has held out for so long against competition might be answered when the government wraps up its eight-month investigation into how Group 21, which gained control over the movie industry in the 1980s, has maintained its grip over the three largest importers with exclusive rights to distribute all Hollywood films. They also own 570 out of 676 of the screens in theaters nationwide. It's not a monopoly exactly, said Nawir Messi, chairman of the country's fair competition commission, but with that kind of dominance there are reasons to be suspicious.Even after June revisions to the tax law, Hollywood was largely shut out because their longtime distributors, hit with more than $30 million in unpaid levies and related penalties, were challenging the case in court. It wasn't until Omega Film started by Ajay Fulwani, a nephew of Harris Lesmana, one of Group 21's primary owners got the go-ahead to start importing and distributing blockbuster films that "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" finally hit theaters in late July."Transformers 3," ''Kung Fu Panda 2" and "Fast Five" followed last month. But competitors and moviegoers like Adinda Rizka Margrethe say the changes are minute."In Singapore, some movies like 'Captain America' have already come out, but here not yet," said the 15-year-old school girl as she showed up with three friends at a half-empty theater in downtown Jakarta."I love watching Hollywood movies more than Indonesian movies, so I'm a bit frustrated."Some distributors say Omega is nothing but a proxy of Group 21 something both groups deny and has been given the right to show movies on Group 21's screens."If anybody says there is no link between them, they're either fooling themselves or trying to fool us," said Punjabi, who applied for a film import permit with two other industry leaders earlier this month. If there is no monopoly, Punjabi argues, then Hollywood studios should welcome the formation of a new distributor."The big question will come, 'How many cinemas do you have?'" he said, and here, because of the alleged Omega-Group 21 partnership, competitors will lose out.Where the government stands on Omega remains unclear. But there were enough questions that the customs office decided to temporarily halt Omega's import license several weeks ago until the allegations were cleared up.Others eager to get in on the game say what's been most frustrating has been Hollywood's perceived complacency in doing business with Group 21.Ananda Siegar, owner and CEO of Blitzmegaplex, the second-largest theater chain in Indonesia, had hoped Hollywood would challenge the government's anticompetitive policies with bargaining power they got during their five-month boycott. In addition to a simplified import duty and dropped royalties tax they could have demanded the right to open their own distributors in effect circumventing domestic companies such as Omega as they have done in most other parts of the world.Right now they are barred from doing so because the film industry is on Indonesia's negative investment list a list of businesses largely closed to foreign investors.Hollywood executives were invited last month to discuss investment restrictions with Indonesian government officials, though both sides have remained mum about the outcome of those talks.U.S. Ambassador Scot Marciel, however, told the English-language newspaper, the Jakarta Globe, last week that it looked like the government might be willing to open the doors a bit."We think more competition is good," he said." We wouldn't support a monopoly."Copyright 2011 Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
